Community Iftar marks end of Ramadan

The community of Muslims and non Muslims celebrated together at a jointly held event, during which presentations were given about the Biggleswade Islamic Community Centre and the nature of fasting during Ramadan.

The Iftar was attended by David Albone, Mayor of Biggleswade, Stephen Mosley, Constable, Community Cohesion, Bedfordshire Police, Cllr Bernard Briars, cllr Pete Biernis and a video message was sent from MP Alistair Burt.

The event at the Weatherly Centre was organised by amongst others, Aysha Boshor a representative of the Biggleswade Islamic Community Centre and was designed to promote interfaith tolerance as part of #WeStandTogether, a national police campaign to promote community cohesion and The Big Iftar.

Iftar is the meal eaten at the end of a day of fasting during sunset hours in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The community Iftar began traditionally with dates and water, followed by a meal which was contributed by the Muslim community.

Aysha said: “The short presentations by members of the community went down well with all who attended and the food supplied by every Muslim family was excellent!

“Speaking to the non Muslim people who came to this event, I found that there was more understanding of what our religion and what Ramadan was all about. I think the event was a great success and we will look forward to another one next year.”
