Conservatives dominate council

The previous administration was made up of 47 Conservatives, six Independents, four Liberal Democrats and one Labour councillor.

The declaration of results at Central Bedfordshire Council’s headquarters in Priory House, Chicksands, followed an election which saw 159 candidates vying for 59 seats on the authority.

Central Bedfordshire Council’s Chief Executive and Returning for the Officer, Richard Carr welcomed the Council.

He said: “As well as congratulating our newly elected Members I would also pay tribute to the hard work and commitment of those Councillors who have left us.

“I would also like to thank the hundreds of polling and count staff who have supported these elections. Our elections team have done a fantastic job.”

The list of councillors elected in Central Bedfordshire for the Chronicle Country area is as follows:

Arlesey: Ian Dalgarno (Conservative), David Shelvey (Conservative), Richard Wenham (Conservative); Biggleswade North: Maurice Jones (Conservative), Jane Lawrence (Conservative); Biggleswade South: David Lawrence (Conservative), Tim Woodward (Conservative); Northill: Frank Firth (Conservative); Potton: Doreen Gurney (Conservative), Adam Zerny (Independent); Sandy: Caroline Maudlin (Conservative), Peter Smith (Conservative), Tracey Stock (Conservative); Shefford: Lewis Birt (Conservative), Tony Brown (Conservative); Silsoe and Shillington: Alison Graham (Independent); Stotfold & Langford: Steven Dixon (Conservative), Brian Saunders (Conservative), John Saunders (Conservative).

An announcement about which councillors will take up different positions on the Council, including appointments to the Executive and the role of Council Chairman, will be made at the Annual Meeting, which will take place at Priory House on Thursday, May 21, starting at 6.30pm.
