Council consultation leads to bus re-think

Central Beds Council has acted on feedback from a consultation in Sandy about changes to the route of the 73 bus service, and is looking how Engayne Avenue can continue to be served safely.

The council recently conducted the consultation about the route, operated by Stagecoach, after the bus company was asked to consider how links to the railway station and Tesco could be improved.

The consultation was very positive and more than 400 questionnaires were returned.

One clear message which came across is that the public is concerned about the possibility of losing the bus service to Engayne Avenue if the route is altered.

The changes were suggested following concerns about buses having to reverse in Engayne Avenue, close to an old people’s home and a school.

As a result of feedback from the consultation, the council is involved in further negotiations with Stagecoach regarding options on how Engayne Avenue can continue to be served safely.

Councillor Brian Spurr, Executive Member for Community Services, said: “The reason the council carries out public consultations is that we are keen to know what residents want.

“In this instance there was a clear message that members of the public want the number 73 bus to continue to serve Engayne Avenue.

“We want to reassure passengers that it will continue to do so until the end of the year, and we are hopeful that a viable solution can be agreed upon within this time.

“However, as the 73 is a commercial service, Stagecoach will make the final decision on the route.”

As part of the planned changes, Stagecoach is looking at providing a new stop near the Budgens store in Kestrel Way to serve residents of the Fallowfield estate.
