Cricketers will walk over hot coals for club

MEMBERS of a cricket club are prepared to walk over hot coals to raise money for new equipment – quite literally.

More than 30 members of Blunham Cricket Club will be walking across five metres of coals burning at around 800 degrees fahrenheit as they seek to raise cash for new three-lane cricket nets.

The group members will be putting themselves through the ordeal on Saturday (September 10) as part of the fundraising process for the nets.

Club treasurer and secretary Carole Harding, who is also the Biggleswade Chronicle’s Blunham correspondent said the club is keen to raise money, even if they do experience pain along the way.

She said: “To be honest I’m trying not to think about the whole thing – I have signed up to it and it is good to be raising sponsorship but it is not going to be an easy process!

“We have arranged for a company to come to our ground where they will set up the equipment and we will take it in turns to put ourselves through the walking.”

At one stage around 150 people connected with the club were going to take part but due to illness, injuries and other commitments that number has been whittled down.

Carole added: “I’m 67 and one of the older volunteers but we have members of all ages who are taking part.

“Each person has set themselves a fundraising target and when they reach them we should be near to our overall target.”

The nets are expected to cost around £36,000 and much of this will be paid for through grants obtained through the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Up to a third will need to be raised through fundraising though.
