EastEnders actress opens charity fete

MORE than 4,000 people enjoyed a day in the sun at a hospice fundraiser on Sunday (August 14).

Sue Ryder Care at St John’s Hospice, Moggerhanger was the venue for the annual event, which this year raised more than £20,000.

It was officially opened by EastEnders actress Samantha Womack, who plays Ronnie Mitchell in the soap.

The fundraiser has taken place every year since the hospice opened in 1982, and organiser Joy Cooper-Watson said this year was one of the most successful ever.

She said: “We had so many visitors we used every available parking space, and lots of people brought picnics and made a real day of it.

“There were more than 40 outside stallholders and there was a lot for visitors to enjoy.”

It was also a pleasure welcoming Samantha Womack, Joy said.

She added: “Samantha stayed for quite a while and she was happy to spend time signing autographs and having her picture taken.

“She also visited three of our patients which meant an awful lot to them.

“She was a pleasure to have around.”

As well as the many trade stalls visitors could also enjoy face painting, steam engine rides, swing boats, paintball, archery and a fun dog show, among other attractions.
