Ewan Gordon, 42, plans to run the equivalent of FORTY marathons on consecutive days to get from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

The 1,050 mile journey is in honour of youngster Thomas Laurie, who died in February last year at the age of nine from cockayne syndrome.

Just 100 youngsters have been diagnosed with the genetic condition in the UK.

Ewan, of Langford, was inspired to adopt his wacky outfit for the trial after a friend said they would sponsor more money for charity if he did.

He has been growing his beard and hair in time for the run in May and June so he looks like the Tom Hanks character who ran across America in the Oscar winning film.

Ewan said: “Thomas was full of fun, since doing this fundraising I have met lots of kids with cockayne syndrome and they all only know how to love.

“There is no cure, so at the moment my plan is to run the length of the country making as many people aware of this condition as possible.

“My route is a little bit different, I’m trying to avoid as many roads as possible as I don’t want to die, so I’m taking a lot of national trail paths. It’s going to add an extra 250 miles onto my route.”

Ewan aims to complete his quest in under 40 days. He also plans to run races later in the year including the Lond
on, Manchester, Loch Ness, Chester and Snowdon marathons.

Ewan is raising the money for three charities which helped Thomas - Amy and Friends - Cockayne Syndrome Support, the hospice Helen and Douglas House and ROSY - Respite nursing for Oxfordshire’s Sick Youngsters.

Cockayne syndrome causes growth failure, impaired development of the nervous system, and premature ageing. It also causes sensitivity to sunlight, hearing loss and can affects all internal organs.
