Finally a museum for Sandy?

Sandy Historical Research Group (SHRG) has long been searching for premises in which to open a museum within the town.

On Tuesday (November 27) SHRG met with town councillors to discuss the possibility of using the current council offices in Cambridge Road when the council moves to the Old Chapel.

SHRG chairman Mick Reynolds said: “A museum for Sandy is called for in the town plan and has the support of Sandy Town Council.

“It will preserve Sandy’s heritage in a permanent home, provide an accessible archive for residents and visitors, and contribute to the regeneration of our town centre.

“This is a golden opportunity to provide a real legacy for all with an interest in Sandy.”

The discussions at the meeting centred on the location and funding of the museum and on the use of professional consultants.

Mayor of Sandy Susan Sutton said: “We were delighted to hear from SHRG of their interest in acquiring 10 Cambridge Road for a museum.

“Our move to Pleasant Place will give this project a real chance of finally getting off the ground.

“SHRG have been working on this project for a number of years and by working together we could achieve a good solution for both parties.”

Mick believes that the group will be able to obtain grant funding to fit out and operate the museum but additional money will be needed to either buy the building or to take out a long lease.
