Football and cricket clubs could benefit from windfall

Central Beds Council have stated £52,208 is available to spend on ‘the construction cost for providing the formal sports areas and changing facilities on site at Land East of Biggleswade’.

Biggleswade United have outlined a proposal to relocate to Land East and to adapt the developer’s original plans which would provide improved facilities at the site.

Club Secretary Tracey James said: “We just can’t incorporate youth teams on our current site so it is vital for us to be able to relocate to achieve our goals.

“We want to add training pitches, youth pitches and would also look into the possibility of a 3G pitch.

“Of course the plans are in the very early stages but we sense this development could really help the football club become an integrated part of the community.”

Biggleswade Town Cricket Club has a proposal for the development and improvement of their facilities already existing at Fairfield Road.

After receiving Clubmark accreditation last October confirming the commitment of the club to being safe, effective and child friendly, the door was opened for them to apply for funding from bodies such as Sport England.

Matt Twigg, Treasurer of the Cricket Club, said: “It is our desire to improve our facilities following the award of Clubmark.

“It is our intention to focus on providing safe and effective practice facilities for the children that participate in our coaching programme and children from schools in Biggleswade.

“We are however in the early stages of any potential project but it is an exciting time for the Cricket Club.”

At a meeting on Tuesday evening Biggleswade Town Council agreed to support both proposals in principle although they requested more details on the financial side of both projects.

It is unclear whether the Town Council would be willing to offer any funding to either project at this time.
