Fundraiser to thank hospital for saving child

Two-year-old Mason Quince of Langford was diagnosed with liver cancer in July last year – but he has made a good recovery thanks to the care he received at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Mason’s mother, Clare Quince, said: “We took him for a check-up because he had a really big tummy.

“We noticed it before but we didn’t think it was any different from another child but as time went on it became really distended with lots of veins.

“But he was well in himself and doing everything normal.”

The doctor immediately knew what was wrong and sent Mason to Addenbrooke’s.

Mason, of Flexmore Way, had to go through intensive chemotherapy. When it was discovered that the tumour had wrapped its way around some of the liver’s main blood vessels Claire and her husband, Dean, were told that he would need a liver transplant.

He was lucky enough to be offered a transplant at Birmingham Children’s Hospital in November and after a successful operation he had his last lot of chemotherapy four days before Christmas.

Claire said: “We’ve had a really intense journey but a relatively short journey compared to other people. It has not even been a year.

“We are just totally amazed at the people we’ve met that have supported us and the treatment has been absolutely phenomenal.

“We couldn’t have done it without all our friends and family and all the doctors.

“Mason has been a little soldier all the way through. I was chasing him around Addenbrooke’s whilst he was on chemotherapy! He has been playing and he has made us laugh all the way through.”

His seven-year-old sister, Hollie, has also been very supportive and mature throughout, Claire added.

Mason is now living a normal life, aside from regular check-ups and medication, and he has just started at Owlets Preschool in Langford.

Mason’s aunt, Hannah-Dee Bowles, is organising a fun day for the children’s cancer ward at Addenbrooke’s. It will take place at The Cock Inn in Gamlingay from 2.30pm to 6.30pm on Saturday, June 21.
