His support comes after Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, during the Liberal Democrat Conference this week, promised to finish the proposed Oxford to Cambridge rail line and rebrand it the ‘Garden Cities Line’.

Mayor Will Jackson said: “Sandy Town Council supports the re-opening of the Oxford to Cambridge rail link and has done for years.

“We welcome any initiatives which promote the development of this east-west link which can only be of benefit to our community.

“The garden city line is an interesting idea which sits well with Sandy’s market gardening heritage.”

Sandy was listed along with Ampthill, Leighton Buzzard, St Neots, Bicester and Great Cambourne as potential new garden cities.

Work has already started on reinstating the rail line between Oxford and Bedford by upgrading the existing route via Bletchley.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: “Garden cities are a vital cornerstone of our plan to boost house building to 300,000 homes a year – enough to meet demand and keep prices in reach while still protecting our precious green space and preventing urban sprawl.”

However, the idea hasn’t gone down well with everyone.

Local resident James Jamieson asks: “Do the Lib Dems not realise that changing Sandy into a garden city will mean them coalescing into their neighbours?”
