GCSE success for Sandy students

STUDENTS from Sandy Upper School celebrated another year of GCSE success.

This year 67 per cent of pupils achieved five or more A* to C grades overall, a two per cent increase from the previous year.

There was an improvement in maths GCSE achievements with 67 per cent getting A* to C, of which 35 per cent were A* to B grades.

The percentage of students achieving five A* to C grades including English and maths was 47 per cent.

In ICT, there was a 100 per cent pass rate of students achieving A* to C, a total of 42 students. Physics and chemistry also exceeded targets for A* to B grades, both at 60 per cent.

Emma Brown was one of the high achievers with five A*s, two As, two Bs and one C.

Planning to stay on at the school for her A-levels she said: “I was so scared but eager to know my results. When I saw what I had got I was incredibly relieved.”

Danielle Chillington was pleased with her five As and five Bs.

She said: “I was so scared to pick up my results. I’m really happy with what I got and I now plan on staying on to do my A-levels. After that I’m hoping to go to university to study medicine.”

With four A*s, two As and two Bs Esme Famewo did better than she thought she would.

She said: “I was incredibly nervous to pick up my results but I’m so pleased. I now plan on studying for my A-levels to do English literature, art and textiles.”

Francesca Germany performed well with four A*s, two As and four Bs.

She said: “I was absolutely petrified, I’m still shaking now. I’m extremely pleased with my results and I look forward to staying here for my A-levels.”

Matthew Locke was nervous to pick up his results but achieved two A*s, six As and two Bs.

He said: “I’m very pleased with how I’ve done. I am going to be staying on to do my A-levels and after that I hope to go to London to audition for drama and dance schools.”

Other top performers at the school included Peter Robinson with seven As and three Bs, Bryony Royal with two A*s, six As and two Bs and Anna Sharman with two A*s, five As and one B.

Daniella Davies also achieved two A*s, three As and one B along with the Specialist Diploma in Hair and Beauty, which is equivalent to seven GCSE’s.

Headteacher David Stevinson said: “I am very pleased with the results, we have done even better than last year.

“I’m glad to see that the students have reaped the benefits from all their hard work and that the support and help from their teachers and staff have paid off. We will continue to push our standards even higher next year.”
