Get on your bike!

NEW signs indicating a bicycle route have been slammed by a resident who claims they are a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Dave Bennett, who lives close to London Road and Kitelands Road in Biggleswade where the signs are located, says he cannot understand why they have been put up.

He said: “These signs have sprung up out of nowhere and I cannot understand what they are there for – they have a picture of a bicycle on them but what does that actually mean?”

Dave contacted the highways and transportation department at Central Bedfordshire Council but says he is none the wiser after speaking to a member of staff.

He added: “They said the signs are there to show that the roads are part of a cycle route, but surely any road can be a cycle route if somebody wants to cycle on it.

“To think that the council has been cutting services and people have been losing their jobs, and then they spend taxpayers’ money on something like this – it really is unbelievable.”

Basil Jackson, assistant director for highways and transportation at Central Bedfordshire Council said: “The signs that have been installed in Biggleswade indicate sections of local, regional (Milton Keynes to Biggleswade) and national (London to Grimsby) cycle routes.

“They have been identified as suitable cycling routes which will reduce the chances of conflict with other road users.

“The works carried out were paid for from developer funding and therefore at no cost to the taxpayer.”
