Give the needy a helping hand

A supermarket’s customers are being asked to consider the needy whilst doing their weekly shop.

Sainsbury’s in Biggleswade is joining forces with FareShare for its Million Meal Appeal on Saturday and Sunday (October 6 and 7).

Shoppers can buy and donate long-life foods to help FareShare deliver 1.2 million meals to 720 charities. More than 900 stores will be taking part.

Customers can donate an item from the Million Meal Appeal shopping list, which includes tinned goods, dried pasta, pasta sauce, rice, tea and instant coffee. They should buy the items as usual and then place them in a collection box after going through the checkout.

Online customers can choose to make a £1 donation between Wednesday (October 3) and Tuesday, October 9.

Lindsay Boswell, chief executive officer for FareShare, said: “The Million Meal Appeal has come at a crucial time. Around 5.8 million people live in deep poverty in the UK, meaning they struggle to afford everyday essentials like food.

“I hope many Sainsbury’s Biggleswade customers can support the appeal and help us to provide even more food to the charities and community projects we support across the country.”

Volunteers are also needed to help out at the Biggleswade store during the appeal. Visit www.fareshare.org.uk to register.
