Gliding through the skies in the silent aircraft

Cambridge Gliding Centre is holding an open day at its Gransden Lodge airfield base on Sunday.

It will be a chance for potential pilots to have a low cost trial lesson and there will also be static aircraft displays, video presentations and talks – plus refreshments.

Club chairman Paul Ruskin said: “There are over 8,000 glider pilots in Britain and on a fine summer’s day gliders outnumber powered aircraft in our skies by four to one but because we fly silently, we often go unnoticed. That’s why we’re running an open day to tell the public about gliding.

“Our sport is open to all ages; with proper training, young people can safely and legally fly solo before they’re old enough to get even a provisional driving licence.”

The airfield is located on the B1046 close to Little Gransden. The open day will run from 10am and admission is free.

Paul added: “It’s not difficult to learn to fly a glider and the club always welcomes new members, whether or not they have previous experience.

“If you’re interested in flying but have never experienced gliding come to the open day to find out what it’s all about.”
