Golfers may gain nine holes

Mount Pleasant Golf Club in Lower Stondon has submitted plans to Central Beds Council requesting permission to add an additional nine holes, bringing the total to 18 holes altogether.

The golf club is located off Station Road and it has been in existence since 1992.

The document states: “The application site totals approximately 16 hectares with around 0.1 hectares of remodelled land on the existing golf course required to link the two nines. The excellent demographics and current popularity of the golf course points towards a need to extend the facility by nine holes.

“This will allow a greater number of players on to the course at any one time, open its appeal up to the golf society market (nine holes are not considered by most societies for golfing events), create a much better operating model with two starting points and generally improve the sustainability of the facility as a viable sporting and recreational amenity.”

Irrigation throughout the golf course would also be improved.

The application continues: “The golf course market and competition from other clubs and sports or alternative leisure activities has become ever more intense and any successful golf club needs to be attractive, fun, in very good condition and obviously cost efficient and secure in terms of the resources it requires.”

The different soils required for the design would be imported over a course of two years with around 40 lorry visits per day.

There would be temporary construction access off Station Road and the section nearest the houses would be completed in two months to minimise any inconvenience to residents. The whole project would be finished within three years.
