Historical side added to new area by village brook

A grant of more than £9,000 will be used to create a heritage trail.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has given the grant, totalling £9,700, to Gamlingay Parish Council. The trail will be created on the new Millbridge Brook Meadows and St Mary’s Field site off Station Road in Gamlingay.

The project will create a circular trail focusing on the Saxon burial site, which was discovered during an excavation a decade ago.

Complete skeletons were discovered on the site at the time. Easily accessible pathways will lead to information signs. There will also be a leaflet to tell visitors about the local history.

Sarah Groom, chair of Gamlingay Parish Council, said: “We are delighted to receive this grant as an acknowledgement of the community’s enormous enthusiasm for this project.”

Gamarch, Gamlingay’s volunteer history group, has been investigating the three fields and will analyse the finds with the help of Jigsaw Cambridgeshire. The parish council’s project officer will work with the local schools to develop information and worksheets for children visiting the site.

Work will start in the autumn and there will be a public exhibition to launch the trail early in the new year.
