It’s a nightmare

NIGHTMARE roadworks have been slammed by a local driver.

This week construction workers have been making changes to a roundabout in Sandy – and one which they modified just weeks ago.

The road was narrowed and the path widened at the St Neots Road exit to the town’s main roundabout, which connects the High Street, Bedford Road, St Neots Road and Sunderland Road.

But the road had to be widened again this week.

Hugh Bennett, who lives in nearby Swansholme Gardens, said: “Sandy at the moment is a nightmare trying to get through by car.

“It is where they put in road calming measures where St Neots Road meets the roundabout. Buses and large vehicles had to go on the other side of the road and it was dangerous.”

Basil Jackson, assistant director for highways and transportation at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “As part of the works it was necessary to slightly amend the kerbline at the roundabout entrance into St Neots Road to better accommodate a manhole cover and provide increased space at a narrow point in the road where a short length of the kerbing was not constructed in accordance with the design drawings.

A spokesman for the contractor, Amey said: “Unfortunately, following routine checks on the work, it was found that one kerb line did not meet the specification.

“As a result we are currently correcting the layout at our own expense.”
