Join heroes on walk for Royal British Legion

Jack Fisher of Stotfold will be joined on the walk by his wife Jean and grandson Luke Britton, along with other veterans and fundraisers.

He has previously raised money for Help for Heroes with parachute jumps – but will be keeping his feet firmly on the ground this time.

Injured Army veteran Corporal Michael Lewis, who has organised the event, will be leading the way.

The charity has supported Michael since he was injured during service in Afghanistan and now he works to raise funds for the cause as the charity’s community fundraiser for Bedfordshire.

He was serving in the Second Battalion Parachute Regiment when his squadron became involved in a massive firefight in August 2008.

He suffered damage to his left arm and lost the heel of his foot and the calf of his lower right leg in the explosion.

Michael spent a year in hospital and months in
 rehabilitation learning to walk again and regain the use of his arm.

During his time in hospital the Legion supplied him with everyday essentials.

When he eventually returned home they helped to make life easier with kitchen modifications and other safety measures such as hand rails around the house.

He is calling on the community to turn out for the event.

He said: “Even though Afghanistan and Iraq have come to an end, it’s still very important that we raise money not only for the Poppy Appeal but all year around for the wounded and sick.”

The walk gives participants the choice between a 2km or 10km walk around Priory Country park.

It is suitable for all the family, including little ones in prams and wheelchair users, and dogs are also welcome.

Registration takes place at 10am, with the walks setting off at 11am.
