Jubilee trees will flourish in this recreation ground

Sixty new trees have been planted to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The locally sourced trees from the Community Tree Trust were planted in Gravenhurst Recreation Ground by Central Beds Council and its highways contractor, Amey.

The site has a history of Jubilee planting with children from the Lower School planting a copse of 40 trees for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 1992/93.

The small woodland is composed of six English oak trees, with the remaining trees comprising cherry, poplar, birch, hornbeam and lime.

The variety of trees was chosen because it minimises the risk of disease which having only one type of tree could create. It will also looked nicer.

Councillor Angela Barker, chairman of the council, said: “It was great to be out with colleagues from Amey to plant these trees.

“It was very cold but they are in a beautiful location and we trust they will thrive there.”

Local ward councillor Alison Graham was also at the tree planting. She said: “The other copse in Gravenhurst is looking really good and well established now so it was good to be able to add to the trees in the area.”

Clive Parker, landscape manager at Amey, added: “These will grow to create a new woodland that can be enjoyed by the local community for years to come.”
