Legion’s appeal for members

The women’s section of a Royal British Legion (RBL) branch could be under threat due to a lack of members.

The section from the Biggleswade RBL has suspended its meetings until new members can be found.

Chairman Nancy Cole has appealed for more would-be members to sign up, and especially from the younger generations.

Mrs Cole said: “We normally meet once a month at Biggleswade fire station to socialise and discuss plans for any events that we may be
organising.

“But it has got to the point where there are normally only around five of us and it tends to be the same people who come every time.”

While the current membership is enough to keep the organisation running, it does place limitations on the
organisation.

Mrs Cole added: “Of course the people who we have now are very committed and work hard with the organisation of fundraising events, but we could really do with a greater diversity of members.

“Unfortunately there is rarely much interest from younger people – there seems to be a great deal of apathy.

“This is a shame as the Royal British Legion supports many servicemen and women and their families who are involved in modern conflicts around the world.”

As well as helping with general fundraising the section – which was establised around 1900 – also plays a key role in the annual Remembrance Sunday parade and service in Biggleswade.

Mrs Cole or another representative from the section will normally participate as a standard bearer and will also lay a wreath at the war memorial in the market square.

Membership is open to all – not just to those who work in the armed forces.

The men’s section of the branch is also always looking for new members.
