Mayor’s awards are presented

The Mayor of Sandy presented three community awards at the Annual Town Meeting held on Monday evening.

Will Jackson presented the Award for Citizenship to Mary Baker, the Youth Award for Citizenship to Amy Cook and the Group Award for Citizenship to Seetec.

On deciding who to give the awards to he said: “It was a very, very hard job to distinguish between all of the nominees.

“If I could have, I would have given everyone an award who was put forward. It is absolutely marvellous some of the work they do.”

Each winner was presented with a certificate and a shield. The group award was given to Seetec who carry out a number of tasks in Sandy the Town Council do not have time to do themselves.

Mayor Jackson added: “They do a marvellous job around the town. They keep our town lovely and clean.”

The individual award went to Mary Baker who has been a member of the Royal British Legionfor a number of years.

Mayor Jackson said: “Mary has been incredibly devoted. Even when members of her family have been ill she has continued to work hard for the Legion in Sandy.”

Finally, the young person award went to Amy Cook who looks after her disabled parents but despite this has managed to hold the attendance record at school and achieve academic excellence.

After the awards were given out those who attended had the opportunity to ask questions of the Sandy Town Council.

Topics ranged from crime, the council’s alterations of the Tourist Information Centre , council tax and the loss of the number 73 bus on Engayne Avenue from the end of May.

In his annual address the Mayor said: “I would like to thank the residents of Sandy for the warm welcome I have had in my first year as mayor.

“Myself and my wife have thoroughly enjoyed it and we have met some wonderful people. We thank you for the hospitality given to us. Thank you very much.”
