Meeting a hissing cockroach at Langford Lower

MINIBEASTS were on everyone’s mind when they descended on a lower school.

Staff from Shepreth Wildlife Park visited the youngsters at Langford Lower School on Friday (June 24) – and they brought with them a range of different animals.

Stick insects, a hissing cockroach and a gecko all fascinated the Key Stage One pupils, as did a corn snake, a giant African landsnail and even an albino skunk.

Elaine Warren, teaching assistant for Key Stage One, said: “It was very interactive with the children and they were very excited as you can imagine.

“We looked at lots of different animals in two sessions. There were two park representatives and they told the children about the animals’ habitats, what they like to eat, whether they are daytime or night-time animals and how dangerous they are.”

The children in Maple Class and Holly Class have been studying minibeasts this term and the activity morning was arranged to complement the work that they have already done on the topic.

The morning was part of Shepreth Wildlife Park’s outreach programme. They had not been to Langford Lower before but the school would definitely consider inviting them back in future years.
