New support for drink and drug addicts

The Westminster Drug Project (WDP) is working with Beds Police, Biggleswade Town Council, Central Beds Council and other partners to help vulnerable members of the community.

Outreach workers Chrissie Jackson and Gail Coffin spend time with those who are suffering from substance addictions, as well as the homeless and others in need of their support.

The WDP is based locally at the Biggleswade Town Council offices in Saffron Road, and works closely with CAN, who also provide services to individuals.

Chrissie said: “A person who is affected by any of these issues will often be referred to us by Beds Police or the council, and we can take things from there.

“We will visit people in their homes or talk to them on the street.

“We will normally build up a relationship with them and a good level of trust, before we help them with possible detoxing and treatment programmes.”

Sergeant Gary Kidd, community sergeant for the Biggleswade and Shefford area, said: “The WDP plays a vital role in helping people who are battling addictions.”
