No lack of punch at Chicksands charity night

ORGANISERS of a fundraising boxing tournament were not pulling any punches when it came to charity.

The evening, held at the DISC Chicksands base on Thursday last week (November 24) raised £6,000 which will be split between two causes.

Half will go to the Help for Heroes charity while the other part will go to Stevenage Amateur Boxing Club (ABC).

Staff Sergeant Andrew King from DISC Chicksands, who organised the event with Paul Crane and Geoff Glencross from Stevenage ABC is delighted with the amount raised.

He said: “We had around 20 boxers taking part aged from 10 upwards. More than 300 people watched as guests, and there was a three-course meal as well.”

There was also a charity auction with various sports memorabilia up for grabs including a boxing glove signed by James DeGale and a Wolverhampton Wanderers shirt signed by all the players.

The standard of boxing was also high, Stf Sgt King said.

He added: “We saw some very talented young boxers. Some looked like the they could have bright futures in the sport.”

The evening, which was held for the second year running was the latest in a series of fundraisers organised by Stf Sgt King.

Earlier this year he put on a summer fete and a pool evening.

Other benefiting charities have included the Royal British Legion and the Army Benevolent Fund.
