On stage proposal no laughing matter!

Celebrations were in order after romantic Sam Burton proposed to his girlfriend in front of thousands of people at Wembley Stadium.

And while the couple were enjoying a gig by comedian Russell Howard, it was certainly no joke when Sam hopped 
on stage to pop the big question.

As the 12,000 strong crowd cheered, stunned Francesca Gray delivered the punchline – saying yes!

Sam, 20, of Horseshoe Close in Dunton spent months planning the surprise.

He had numerous conversations with Russell Howard’s tour manager, Kumar Kamalagharan and even spoken Russell, star of TV’s Mock The Week and his own hit show Russell Howard’s Good News,.

They came up with the story that Sam had won front row tickets to the gig this week in a phantom competition.

He said: “She was really nervous and said ‘what if we’re on camera?’. I thought ‘well you are going to be on camera!’.

“At the end of his gigs, Russell does a question and answer session.

“He wanted me to be the last question and challenge him to an arm wrestle, which gave me an excuse to get up on stage.

“He handed me the mic and all I had to do was ask the question.”

Cameras were then pointed at Francesca as he dropped to one knee, produced a ring and popped the question. Her response was shown on the large screens either side of the stage.

Fran’s parents, brother Daniel who had passed his driving test on his first attempt just a few hours beforehand, auntie, cousin and friend Tommy O’dell were in the audience to cheer Sam on.

The couple have known each other since they were children, but have been romantically involved for around four years.

Sam added: “When I asked the question the crowd went absolutely mental and her face was a picture.

“We had to wait a few moments for her to give an answer. I was a bit worried she might have a funny turn!”

Fran, 20, currently lives in Greenacres, Gamlingay – but the pair are hoping to move to Biggleswade.
