Drivers and people living in Potton said last week’s emergency closure of Sun Street, which leads into the market square, led to illegal driving.

HGVs were using the narrow Bull Street as a cut through and vehicles were driving the wrong way along this one-way street. Lack of signs from Gamlingay left drivers arriving in the market square nowhere to go.

Mogen Diamant of Beech Court said the closure was affecting the market square businesses with few drivers parking in the square.

Writing on Facebook Shaun Gates said: “Hundreds of drivers have risked three points by driving through the no motor vehicles sign into Bull Street.”

Central Beds Councillor Brian Spurr said that there were problems in Bull Street despite the council getting the builder to add more signs. Foreign drivers were relying on their sat navs.

The council asked the builder to have someone on site stopping the HGVs but it proved difficult. Starting the road closure on the other side of Chapel Street improved the situation and extra signs were added from Gamlingay, he said.

The builder finished five days ahead of schedule.
