Parents speak out as teachers strike

STRIKING teachers forced around 30 mid-Bedfordshire schools to shut yesterday in the UK-wide protest against proposed pension changes.

Pupils including those at Stratton Upper School in Biggleswade, Henlow Middle School and Stondon Lower found themselves with an extra day off as staff protested against the proposed new government rules – which union chiefs claim would mean that teachers would have to pay more, work longer and see reduced final pensions.

But while some parents supported teachers’ decision to strike, others were angry that the strike action fell the day before some schools were set to close for a teacher training day today.

Kelly Stafford from Biggleswade commented on the Biggleswade Chronicle’s Facebook page yesterday: “It hasn’t affected me as my children’s school is open today. I know it’s affecting others as their children’s schools are closed. I think it’s wrong that they do it today as school is also closed tomorrow for teachers training. And what about parents losing wages? Things are tight enough as it is at the moment.”
