The determined players are aiming to raise £2,500 for Cardiomyopathy UK by completing 1,760km between them, representing the journey to and from the club’s Bedfordshire home and Erlensee, Biggleswade’s twin town.

Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that affects 160,000 people in the UK, with the charity supported by the family of one of the players.

Team manager Lee Bilcock said: “Following the postponement of grassroots football the boys were keen to do something to stay in touch and have a bit of fun during the current lockdown, but most importantly we wanted to give something back to charity.

“Cardiomyopathy has a close connection to a member of the squad and one we fully support and look forward to raising money for.”

Biggleswade deputy mayor Grant Fage is also taking part. He added: “I’m not a member of the team but felt since they’re showing so much support for the town and the work that the council does alongside the twinning association to build strong connections with Erlensee, I couldn’t resist in getting involved!”

The players started the challenge on November 5, and had initially set their fundraising goal to £1,760. However, they have reached this milestone so have now upped the target, while they hope to complete their distance by December 2.

Club director Tom Gentle said: “The best thing about the challenge has been watching the team come together. It’s great to see the team support and camaraderie.

“On average we have run 87km per day and there have been great contributions from everyone involved, ranging from a few kilometres to one runner’s total of 126kms so far in the challenge (Dan Fury).

“The team are also taking the extra effort on Sunday mornings when games should have been played and are out running in their full kit (bright pink shirts and black shorts).

“Thank you for the donations, it’s absolutely fantastic, and thank you for the amazing effort from the players and the deputy mayor, Grant Fage.”
