More than 800 runners take part in scorching Biggleswade's Run The Wade event

More than 800 people took part in this year’s edition of Run The Wade, a running event held in Biggleswade town centre.

Participants were invited to take part in 5km or 10km events on Sunday, May 24.

Biggleswade Town Council confirmed to the Chronicle that despite the soaring temperatures, there were no heat-related incidents.

The town council’s community development manager Ian Campbell said: “We did a thorough risk assessment and safety briefing, reminding people of the need for sun block and water.

“There was a mountain of free water bottles sponsored by Surfin’ Café. The fire service set-up a sprinkler to cool down the runners on their return which was also used by the public and really appreciated by the kids!”

According to the My Race Result platform, the Run the Wade men’s 10-kilometre event was won by James Akerman from Edmonton Running Club with a time of 37 minutes 40 seconds, while the women’s 10-kilometre event was won by Sophia Fildes from Bedford & County Athletic Club in a time of 44min 37 sec.

The men’s five-kilometre event was won by Casey Stevenson from Corby Athletic Club in a time of 16min 44 sec, while the women’s five-kilometre event was won by Hannah Ridley from North Herts Road Runners in a time of 20min 53 sec.

Following the Run The Wade races, a festival of sports and fitness took place in Market Square with visitors invited to discover local sports clubs, try different activities and watch live demonstrations.

The event also featured representation from Biggleswade’s French friendship town of Bailly and Noisy le Roi, who networked with the Scouts and other town representatives.
