The £200,000 project, funded by Central Bedfordshire Council to replace the skate park which closed in June 2018, has been designed with input from local skateboarders, BMX and scooter riders of all ages and abilities, and with support from The Skateparks Project.

It was constructed by Maverick Skateparks, who have created “a superb concrete skate park”, which includes features suitable for everyone. These include quarterpipes, a 360-degree rollover, two volcanoes and a bowl.

The skate park also includes new sensor-controlled LED lighting and CCTV to help users feel safe and it is nestled within “sympathetic landscaping”.

The concrete design is more hard-wearing and is likely to require less repairs.

Cllr Ian Dalgarno, executive member for Community Services at CBC, said: “It’s great to see this skate park open for use, now that Covid-19 restrictions around the use of skate parks have been lifted, but we would like to encourage users to continue to observe safe social distancing in line with the latest government guidelines.”

CBC Cllr for Biggleswade North, Steven Watkins, said: “I’m delighted that we have opened the brand new skate park. I’ve already received a large number of positive comments from the very active skate community, which stretches from the very young to the not-so-young, some of whom I was at school with when the original skate park opened, so I have a real feeling that it has come full circle.

“Maverick has built an excellent facility for us and this project has been an excellent example of partnership between them, local councillors and officers and the skating community, backed by capital from Central Beds Council, for which I am extremely grateful.”

Mayor of Biggleswade Town Council, Cllr Madeline Russell, said: “The town council very much welcomes any initiative that encourages people to be active and enjoy themselves.

“The skate park is a great example and, through excellent consultation, is providing exactly what people want.”
