He has also applauded supermarkets for setting sensible restrictions, and has urged anyone who is struggling to reach out for help.

Cllr Fage said: “Residents are adhering to government advice and taking it seriously – we’re seeing efforts to stay 2m apart in public spaces.

“Even observationally we can see from our car parks, our town centre, and our parks that there is clearly less activity - this is a good thing for keeping Biggleswade clean of Covid-19.

“We’re also seeing more sensible shopping from residents and necessary controls from supermarkets - these include maximum quantity purchases and, in some cases, limits on the number of people in the store at any one time. It’s clear the staff are working around the clock to keep food on the shelves, so councillors thank them for that.

“In terms of the town council’s response, we are a big town with a number of community groups and churches, all of whom are doing their bit to help the vulnerable and isolated.

“The key thing for us is to ensure we leverage these groups as much as possible and assist them in co-ordinating their efforts, supporting them with additional manpower where possible.

“Our priority is those who may not be on social media as they’re the hardest to reach – often they will have no choice but to call the council when in need.

“Our staff are already doing a great job in ensuring key supplies find their way to these people - for anyone else lacking key supplies and who doesn’t have assistance from friends, family or neighbours, please reach out to our office staff on 01767 313134.”
