A total of 5,151 children read 47,630 books during the summer break as part of the challenge.

Every library across Central Bedfordshire took part in the event, which is run by charity The Reading Agency in a bid to encourage people to read more.

All children taking part in the event were entered into a prize draw, with one winner from each library invited to a prize-giving event at Stockwood Discovery Centre, in Luton, earlier this month.

The winners from our area were Maddison Moran, five, from Arlesey, Millie Neish, ten, from Biggleswade, James Milledge, six, from Potton, Dylan Paterson, four, from Sandy, Oliver Gunn, nine, from Shefford and Ashlee McGilley, eight, from Stotfold.

Councillor Brian Spurr,
Executive Member for
Community Services, said: “It’s easy for children to switch off over the summer and not pick up a book
until they get back to school in September, so for so many children to take part in The Summer Reading Challenge was fantastic.”
