Earlier this month Peter Biernis invited volunteers to help him clean up areas of Biggleswade that he said had fallen into disarray.

Peter, of Boothey Close, said dog fouling was a particular problem in many parts of Biggleswade.

Councillor Brian Spurr, executive member for sustainable communities services at Central Beds Council said that dog fouling was taken very seriously by the authorities.

But Peter says that volunteers saw a large amount of dog mess during the clean-up, particularly in the area surrounding Franklin’s Recreation Ground in Mill Lane.

Central Beds Council’s sustainable communities department then confirmed that no fixed penalty notices have been issued for dog fouling in Biggleswade this year.

Peter said: “The council say they take dog fouling seriously but this confirmation shows that they clearly don’t.

“The problem will never be solved if these rules are not enforced properly.”

But Mr Spurr said: “We do take dog fouling extremely seriously. Each year our waste and dog warden teams tackle hundreds of dog fouling hotspots across the Central Bedfordshire area.

He added: “In addition to clearing up the mess, our dog wardens visit problem areas on a regular basis over a
period of two or three months.

“They speak to dog walkers, alert them of the dangers of dog fouling and urge them to be responsible owners.”
