The incident occurred between 7.30pm and 7.40pm on Saturday (April 6).

A 43-year-old man was travelling in his silver BMW along the southbound carriageway of the A1.

As he approached the Black Cat roundabout, which is near Roxton, he was hit from behind by a red Volvo S40.

After both pulling over and getting out of their vehicles, the drivers then discussed the collision before the driver of the Volvo struck the victim to the side of the head, knocking him to the floor.

As a struggle ensued, a second vehicle – believed to have been a blue Audi A8 - pulled up and two men got out, opened the boot of the BMW and stole two bags – one of which contained a large amount of money.

All offenders then got into the Audi and fled towards the A421.

Detective Constable Emma Dahl, who is investigating the incident, is keen to hear from anyone who may have been driving along the A1 at the time and may have witnessed the attack or seen any of the vehicles before the collision.

She said: “It is vitally important that we hear from any motorists who were passing at the time and saw this incident taking place.
“It certainly appears that this was a premeditated attack and the offenders knew exactly what they were doing and how they were going to escape.

“Thankfully the victim did not suffer any serious injuries but he has been left extremely shaken by what has happened.”

Two men have been arrested in relation to this incident and released on police bail pending further enquiries.
