Rugby player hospitalised after fall

The man in his thirties was taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage after falling during a match at Biggleswade Rugby Club.

The player, who was representing Shelford Rugby Club was treated at the scene by a doctor and a paramedic from the Magpas Helimedix air ambulance charity.

Doctor Maria Smith and paramedic Simon Standen were flown to the Langford Road club by pilot Matt Tacon and air observer Steve Hunwicks, who arrived at the ground at around 4.45pm.

The ambulance crew worked with paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) to protect the man’s spine.

He was then taken to hospital by land ambulance and was said to be in a stable condition.

The man was discharged from hospital on Monday (October 15) after suffering ligament and muscle damage.

He said he wanted to thank everyone at Biggleswade Rugby Club for their help and support.

The player gave particular thanks to the wives and girlfriends of the players who stayed with him until the air and land ambulances arrived at the club.
