Town Mayor, Will Jackson, said: “We have listened carefully to what all sections of the community have told us about what they want to see in the cemetery.

“We believe we have a compromise which is accepted by most people.”

The revised regulations require memorabilia to be securely attached to the memorial plinth or within 30 centimetres of the temporary grave marker.

Breakable items like pottery and glass are not allowed but plastic items will be permitted.

A single white solar light will be allowed but it must be firmly affixed.

The regulations have been amended to allow some grave goods for those that wish them but to be restricted in quantity so as not to impede maintenance and to preserve the overall peace and tranquillity of the site.

The decision from the council comes after months of campaigning by Sandy residents.
