Richard Warriner of Sandy will run the Vigin London Marathon to raise funds for Coeliac UK. His 11-year-old daughter, Beth, suffers from the condition.

Richard, 44, said: “I am running the London Marathon because my daughter has the condition and I want to help raise awareness of the problems sufferers have to contend with. Therefore I am delighted to be running in aid of Coeliac UK.”

Richard is no stranger to running – this will be his third marathon. He previously ran the distance in five hours but he hopes to bring it down to four and a half hours this time.

His training is going very well so far.

Richard added: “ I hope to break £300 come the big day and hope the funds raised will help towards any research that may be undertaken so that living standards improve and are made easier for those diagnosed with coeliac disease”

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease caused by intolerance to gluten. Damage to the gut lining occurs when gluten is eaten. There is no cure or medication for the condition; the only treatment is lifelong, strict gluten-free diet.

Without a gluten-free diet the disease can lead to other conditions, such as malnutrition, osteoporosis and small bowel cancer and can cause infertility problems.
