Shefford man has a mountain to climb for charity

A SOLDIER of the future will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of the Help for Heroes charity.

John Moakes, who lives in Ampthill Road, Shefford is hoping to join the Army and will be doing the sponsored climb next March.

John, 25, who is currently working as an IT technician will soon be going through the Army’s trial and selection process.

He said: “It’s something I have wanted to do for a long time, and I am preparing to go through the selection process where you are graded on everything from physical fitness to initiative and ability to lead a team.

Help for Heroes is a charity that I have supported for a long time and as I am hoping to join the Army it seemed like the right cause to raise money for.”

The former Samuel Whitbread Community College student could spend up to a week in Tanzania and is looking forward to the challenges that the 5895-metre climb will bring.
