Sneak peek behind the doors of a Victorian mansion

Sandy Tourist Information Centre is holding its third guided walk of 2014. This time it is a special tour of the interior of The Lodge in Sandy and of its gardens.

This is a rare opportunity to see the interior of this beautiful house, now the UK headquarters of the RSPB, and hear its history and the families who once lived there.

The house was built in the Tudor style in 1870 for Arthur Wellesley Peel, youngest son of Sir Robert Peel, the famous prime minister. The interior of the house was greatly changed in the 1930s when the Stewart family bought the estate.

They added Tudor, 18th century and Victorian fireplaces and filled the house with many treasures and objects d’art, great paintings, medieval and Georgian tapestries and important furniture.

The gardens were re-landscaped by the Stewarts in a simple Italianate style with the addition of the large swimming pool.

The walk will take place on Thursday, June 5 at 7pm. Meet outside the front door of The Lodge at 7pm. It costs £5.50 per person. Book with the TIC on 01767 682728.
