Student chef is going for gold in restaurant contest

Catering and hospitality student Bradley Dorrington, along with fellow Cambridge Regional College (CRC) students Owen Setter and Jenny Beamish Young, will cook and serve a meal for four judged by a team of leading chefs including celebrity cook Cyrus Todiwala, a renowned expert on South Asian cuisine.

They will compete against four other teams at Sheffield on Tuesday (June 30).

Each team consists of two chefs and a waiter, with the students preparing and serving a South Asian themed dinner.

In the run up to the conetst, the CRC team was mentored by Alan Paton, executive chef of Stoke by Hayland Hotel.

Front of House Bradley, 18, of Langley Gardens, Potton, said: “It is fantastic to be in the final of such a great competition. It will be tough but the rewards are massive - last year the prize was four daysin Istanbul.”

He added: “I really like competitions – for me, as Front of House, attention to detail and making sure everything is done perfectly is the most important thing.”

The competition – organised by Skills for Chefs – attracted a recod number of entries from across the country.

Skills for Chefs conference director David McKown said: “This year we received the highest number of entries in the history of the competition.

“All the menus were full of mouth-watering dishes that certainly made the task of selecting the finalists very difficult.”

The results will be announced at a gala dinner on Thursday (July 2), giving the young pretenders a chance to shine in front of some of the world’s biggest names, including Daniel Clifford of Midsummer House.

The grand finale promises to be a star-studded event which will be held at the University of Sheffield.

> Cambridge Regional College provides full-time further education for 16 to 19-year-olds.

It has 4,000 full time and 6,000 part time students with more than 4,500 apprentices currently in training.
