Town centre gets spruce up

An event on Tuesday, June 16, saw a range of advice stalls and other attractions set up in Market Square and the car park of the nearby White Hart pub, where visitors could get information on a range of council services, as well as things such as health and crime prevention.

There were also activities for young people at the skate park near Saxon Leisure Centre.

Another key part of the day was around improving the local area, and that saw teams clearing the Back Street area near the station, as well as carrying out litter picking in the town centre, cleaning road signs, as well as putting up water safety signs along the River Ivel and erecting graffiti boards at The Lakes Recreation Ground.

Volunteers also installed a new bench by Franklin Recreation Ground and cleared vegetation from sections of the Green Wheel.

The event was organised by Central Bedfordshire’s Community Safety Partnership, in partnership with Biggleswade Town Council, and was an extension of the successful Pride In days which took place in Houghton Regis, Stotfold and Dunstable last year.

While they focused purely on crime prevention and personal safety, the Community Engagement Day had a much wider focus, including on health and well-being.

Councillor Brian Spurr, Executive Member for Community Services, said: “I’m delighted that so many people of all ages took advantage of the excellent weather to attend Tuesday’s event.

“It was definitely proof that the new format works, and we look forward to repeating it elsewhere this summer.”
