Training butchers for the next years

TWO young men have defied the unemployment trend by succeeding as butchers’ apprentices.

Ben Shorten, 18, and Tye Bentley, 21, are both working at Woburn Country Foods in Haynes and are part of the National Apprenticeship Awards Scheme.

Ben, who lives in Shefford, has just been given the most improved apprentice of the month trophy for a project with bacon.

Tye has just completed his apprenticeship and attained his Level 2 NVQ. They were given their awards on Tuesday.

Helen Ralley-Davies, the company’s director, said: “Tye is a shining example of a young person who has taken the initiative to do something with his life and train for a career that will keep him employed for life. He is already a great asset to our business.

“Our other apprentice, Ben, is in the middle of his training and has just been given an award for completing a really exceptional project, which has streamlined our bacon production.”

Tye said: “I would recommend the apprenticeship without a doubt, especially with the price of uni going up and the lack of jobs. It’s a really good qualification and there aren’t a lot of people doing it. It’s a really good future.”
