Turf cutting at hospital’s new unit
A turf cutting ceremony was held as work began on the new cancer unit at Lister Hospital.
The Macmillan Cancer unit is costing £3 million and it will double the hospital’s chemotherapy capacity. It will also dramatically reduce the cramped conditions, create a dedicated information centre and develop two gardens in which patients can relax. Tracey Oliver, 38, took centre stage. She was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago. She was joined by local dignitaries.
Tracey said: “Waiting has been the toughest thing for me about having treatment. The waiting area is cramped. There are always people standing. The staff are fantastic but their building is not fit for purpose anymore. This will transform patients’ experiences at a really difficult time in their lives.”
