Two storeys high for new retail buildings in Biggleswade

MANY of the shops in the proposed new look retail park in Biggleswade will be two stories high, it was revealed on Friday (July 1).

LXB Properties, the company that owns the Biggleswade site, explained the plans more fully at its public exhibition.

Carl Barrand, who is in charge of the project at LXB, said: “We estimate about 250 people attended the exhibition and the response was very positive. Over 90 per cent of those that left comments about the scheme were in favour of the it.”

He explained that M&S, if it opens, would cover 30,000 sq ft on the ground. Of this, 10,000 sq ft would be used for Simply Food and there would also be a 3,000 sq ft cafe.

He said: “The majority of the units will be two stories to keep the rent down for retailers.

“Everybody in the town centre will probably continue but they could also have a large store here.”

The alterations to the A1 roundabout, which will make into an oblong shape, have been designed to offset the sight line. This should force drivers to slow down, making it easier to pull out on to the roundabout as drivers turn towards the site.

The shops themselves would not have to close as construction would take place in stages, beginning with the disused buildings. Stores would be able to move into new buildings as their current buildings are removed so that they can remain open.
