Vandals torch Shefford play equipment

SHEFFORD mayor Councillor Paul Mackin has slammed vandals who set fire to children’s play equipment – causing £10,000 worth of damage.

Firefighters were called to the children’s play area in Bellcote Meadow, off Purcell Way on Thursday night last week (January 12) after the Kompan Supernova carousel was set alight.

Mr Mackin said: “The Supernova had only been there for a few months.

“The local children had just started to enjoy it and then before you know it a group of hooligans have come along and destroyed it.

“It looks like they set fire to the top of the Supernova and the fire spread to the rubber matting underneath which was completely ruined as well.”

Mr Mackin said it was frustrating that a small minority had spoiled such a facility for the majority and is unsure whether the council will be able to replace the equipment.

He added: “The equipment was obviously quite expensive and we used Section 106 money to help pay for it.

“I’m not sure whether it will be possible to buy replacements.”

A spokesman for Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a crew from Shefford attended Bellcote Meadow after a call at around 8.15pm.

A Bedfordshire Police spokesman confirmed that an investigation is under way. Anyone with any information should contact 101.
