Video: Sandy Carnival 2013

Sandy Carnival got off to a bright start before falling prey to a heavy downpour.

The popular annual event, this time with a Hollywood theme, was held on Saturday, June 15. Carnival committee chair Hayley Stewart said: “It went well apart from the total downpour.

“We had a fantastic turnout. We had quite a good crowd coming into the field as the parade was going past.”

The crowds stayed during the first light shower but started to disperse when it became heavier. Several of the arena events pulled out but Shefford Majorettes gave a last minute double length performance to make up for this and many of the stallholders braved the weather.

There was only one float on a lorry in the parade but there were also three walking floats. St Swithun’s Lower School were on the lorry with a general film theme. Sandy Upper School based their costumes on Chicago, Sandy Colts showed off their new football strip and their ball skills and Sandy Town Team also had a general film t
theme.

Next year there will be an open theme, Hayley said; the same as at the first Sandy Carnival. Ten groups have already expressed an interest in having a float in 2014’s parade.

The committee is considering opening the events field before the parade next year to increase the chance of catching some sunny weather.
