Visit from Prince celebrates link

A LONG-STANDING international relationship between two schools was celebrated last Friday (January 6).

Prince Akuamoah-Boateng Kwasi from Kwahu-Tafo in Ghana spent the day at Samuel Whitbread Community College in Clifton.

The Prince travelled to the UK to thank staff and students at the upper school for their help in raising funds for the Methodist Junior High School in Kwahu-Tafo.

For almost a decade the two schools have had a twinning link and Samuel Whitbread has raised close to £10,000 for its counterpart through a variety of charity events.

Funds have been used to build new facilities at the Ghanian school including an IT lab, new toilets, a common room and library.

The Prince was accompanied by Humphrey Barclay, the former television producer and development chief for Kwahu-Tafo.

Mr Barclay – who produced hit sitcom Desmond’s for Channel 4 – was adopted into the royal family of Kwahu-Tafo 12 years ago.

The Prince and Mr Barclay spent the day touring the school and talking to staff and students about the friendship between the schools and how they have evolved.

Geography teacher Lee Huckle, who helped to arrange the visit, said: “The Prince was overwhelmed by the welcome he received and I would like to thank all of the governors who came down to meet him.”
