Woman's life saved by family member as four fire crews tackle arson attack in Biggleswade

A woman's life was saved by a family member in a hair-raising rescue after an arson attack in Biggleswade last week.

Investigators are looking into the fire in Heather Drive on Friday, June 26, which was believed to have been started deliberately.

Four fire crews - two from Bedfordshire and two from Hertfordshire - were called upon to put out the flames.

A Beds Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a building fire in Heather Drive, Biggleswade, just after 9pm on Friday, June 26.

"Two crews from Bedfordshire FRS worked alongside two Hertfordshire crews to tackle a fire at a semi-detached house of two floors.

"The first floor was 100% damaged by the fire, but crews managed to limit the damage to just 25% on the other floor.

"The neighbouring property was checked for smoke and fire damage, and one 48-year-old female was pulled to safety by a family member prior to the arrival of Bedfordshire crews.

"She was then conveyed to hospital by the Ambulance Service believe to have been suffering from smoke inhalation.

"The fire was deemed to have been deliberate."

A Beds Police spokesman added: "We were called by the Fire Service at around 9.10pm to a report of a fire at a house in Heather Drive, Biggleswade on Friday, June 26.

"Officers attended the scene and an enquiry is ongoing."
