Jesse Burgoine, 28, and Artjom Nepryahin, 25, allegedly targeted the woman, 24, in a nightclub before taking her home and raping her on a sofa after she fell asleep.

But after discussing the case for two days, a jury at Nottingham Crown Court was unable to reach a verdict on Friday.

Nepryahin, of Preston Road, Liverpool, and Burgoine, of Water End, Wrestlingworth, were told they would face a re-trial on December 5.

They were granted bail and told they must not contact each other or the alleged victim.

Burgoine, who coaches a young women’s Great Britain Rowing team, was a longstanding friend of Nepryahin, another keen rower.

Burgoine broke his journey home shortly before Christmas 2014 by visiting Nepryahin, who had a flat in Nottingham, the trial heard.

They went to Coco Tang club in the city where they saw the girl and danced with her, before she got in a taxi back to the flat with them.
