How to stay safe around fireworks

According to the recent figures thousands of people needed A and E treatment in just one year due to firework related injuries

These days firework displays take place beyond just Guy Fawkes night – they are stunning displays perfect for festivals, special occasions or even just a dark night that needs a little extra pizazz.

But it’s easy to become complacent. A simple sparkler can reach temperatures of up to 2,000°C and a typical firework can reach speeds of 150 miles per hour.

There are steps you can take to ensure yourself and those around you can avoid getting injured by fireworks.

  1. If you are purchasing your own fireworks, you must be sure that they are British Standard Approved fireworks. Look out for BS 1774 on the box. No code – no purchase. Don’t get caught out by faulty fireworks and be sure to buy from a reputable source.
  2. Keep children away from fireworks – that includes before, during or after setting them off. According to firefighters, it’s children who suffer over half of all firework related injuries. Picking up pieces of a firework which has already exploded can still lead to injury, as it can reignite and go off again.
  3. Never relight a dud firework. It might be frustrating to have spent your money on a firework which doesn’t even go off, but absolutely better to be safe than sorry. Instead, let the firework stand for 20 minutes – after that point you should carefully transfer it to a bucket of water where you should leave it overnight. You should then dispose of it the next morning.
  4. Have a first aid kit nearby. If injury does strike, be prepared. On top of the usual first aid kit items, be sure that you also have a supply of burn specific treatment, and have plenty of cold, clean water on standby.
  5. Attend a properly organised public event, which will be licensed and have all safety measures in place. Wrap up warmly, enjoy hot chocolate and toffee apples and bask by the bonfire for the best autumn experience, while professional quality fireworks light up the sky.

Remember, remember, follow the rules and stay safe whilst enjoying your fireworks display.
